Five Tuesdays, February 26-March 26, 6-8 p.m.
The way out of the storm and mud of suffering, the way back to freedom on the high edge of strength and courage, is through the power of compassion. – Roshi Joan Halifax
Standing at the Edge is a five-week book study group based on Standing at the Edge, Finding Freedom Where Fear and Courage Meet by Roshi Joan Halifax.
What edges are you working with in your life? What does freedom feel like to you? With curiosity and gentleness, we will explore the Edge states identified by Halifax— altruism, empathy, integrity, respect, engagement, and compassion. At these edges, we often experience strength and fear. We touch into the full range of our human experience. Guided by Halifax’s wisdom and stories of caregivers, humanitarians, teachers, and other activists, we will explore what it means to live a life of engaged and compassionate service, at the edge.
Each class will include meditation, contemplation practices, an interactive synopsis of the week's reading, and sharing/discussion. Everyone is encouraged to bring questions, ideas, and curiosities to the group each week.
The class topics include:
Class 1: Altruism
Class 2: Empathy & Compassion
Class 3: Integrity
Class 4: Respect
Class 5: Engagement
